The amount is the gross federal debt issued by the United States Department of the Treasury since 1790. It doesn’t include state and local debt, and it doesn’t include the so-called unfunded liabilities of entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

At the end of FY 2015 the gross US federal government debt is estimated to be $18.628 trillion, according to the FY16 Federal Budget. Of this gross amount, debt “Held by the Public: Other” is estimated by usgovernmentspending.com at $11.055 trillion, debt “Held by the Public: Federal Reserve System” (i.e. monetized debt) is estimated by usgovernmentspending.com at $2.452 trillion and debt “Held by Federal Government Accounts” is estimated at $5.121 trillion.

US Gross Output for 2014 Updated

On April 28, 2015, usgovernmentspending.com updated its Gross Output series with the latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, including nominal Gross Output for calendar 2014 of $31.001 trillion. Gross Output for some years previous to 2014 have been revised by BEA.

usgovernmentspending.com now reports Gross Output on its Spending Details page and permits charting of spending and revenue as "percent of Gross Output".

We have extended the Gross Output data series back to 1987.
