Today’s Federal Debt is about $19,433,960,441,000.

The amount is the gross outstanding federal debt issued by the United States Department of the Treasury since 1790.

But, it doesn’t include state and local debt.

And, it doesn’t include so-called “agency debt.”

And, it doesn’t include the so-called unfunded liabilities of entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Federal Debt per person is about $59,559.

At the end of FY 2016 the gross US federal government debt is estimated to be $19.3 trillion, according to the FY17 Federal Budget. Of this gross amount, debt “Held by the Public: Other” is estimated by usgovernmentspending.com at $11.6 trillion, debt “Held by the Public: Federal Reserve System” (i.e. monetized debt) is estimated by usgovernmentspending.com at $2.45 trillion and debt “Held by Federal Government Accounts” is estimated at $5.23 trillion.

Agency debt is debt issued by federal agencies and government-sponsored enterprises, and is not included in the total debt of the federal government.

US Gross Output for 2015 Updated

On April 25, 2016, usgovernmentspending.com updated its Gross Output series with the latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, including nominal Gross Output for calendar 2015 of $31.387 trillion. Gross Output for some years previous to 2015 have been revised by BEA.

usgovernmentspending.com now reports Gross Output on its Spending Details page and permits charting of spending and revenue as "percent of Gross Output".

The Bureau of Economic Analysis has extended its Gross Output series back to 1947 this year, and usgovernmentspending.com has done the same.
